A devastating car accident on U.S. 2 near Monroe claimed the lives of three people and left another person seriously injured early Saturday morning. According to the Washington State Patrol, the crash occurred just after midnight near Sofie Road at milepost 18.
Investigators report that a 26-year-old man, identified as Jose Hernandezibanez, was driving westbound when he attempted to pass another vehicle. During the maneuver, his car crossed into the eastbound lane and struck an oncoming vehicle head-on. Hernandezibanez was killed in the impact, and his 28-year-old male passenger was transported to a nearby hospital with critical injuries.
The two occupants of the eastbound car—33-year-old Maryanne Craig and 33-year-old Dylon Craig—also died at the scene. Authorities closed the highway for several hours to conduct an investigation and clear the wreckage, reopening all lanes by late Saturday morning. State troopers are currently investigating whether drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the fatal collision.
