A staple of Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood is preparing to close its doors. Rain Shadow Meats, the last traditional butcher shop in the area, has announced it will vacate its longtime home in the Melrose Market by the end of 2026.
End of an Era at Melrose Market Owner Russell Flint revealed that after 16 years of operation, the shop’s landlord has chosen not to renew the lease. Flint, who opened the business in 2010 when he was just 30 years old, expressed sadness at the “crossroads” but noted that he has been searching for a new location for nearly two years.
Key Details of the Departure:
- Closing Date: The butcher shop’s final day at the Melrose Market is currently set for December 23, 2026.
- A Neighborhood Loss: The closure marks a significant shift for Capitol Hill, as Rain Shadow Meats was the last remaining dedicated butcher shop in the neighborhood.
- Search for a New Home: While the Melrose location is closing, Flint is actively scouting for a new space to keep the business alive, though no new location has been secured yet.
Changing Landscape The news comes as the Melrose Market—once a pioneer of the neighborhood’s artisanal food scene—undergoes significant changes in ownership and tenant mix. Since the market was purchased by a real estate investment trust in 2019, several original tenants have moved on, and the space has shifted toward more chain-oriented and nightlife-focused businesses.
Flint thanked his loyal customer base for keeping the shop afloat through difficult times, including the pandemic and neighborhood construction. Until the December closing date, Rain Shadow Meats will remain open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for residents looking to support the local institution in its final months at the market.
