Richland Fitness Trainer Survives Terrifying Crocodile Attack in Cozumel

Eric Greager, a 72-year-old fitness instructor and well-known race director from Richland, Washington, is lucky to be alive after fighting off a crocodile during a vacation in Mexico. The attack occurred while Greager was swimming in the ocean near a resort in Cozumel, turning a routine dip into a life-or-death struggle.

Key Details of the Incident:

  • The Struggle: While swimming between buoyed areas, Greager was suddenly struck from behind. A crocodile clamped onto his right arm and began thrashing, a move Greager described as being like a “dog with a rag toy.” He managed to fight back by repeatedly punching and kicking the animal until it released its grip.
  • Heroic Rescue: Bystanders and a local lifeguard acted quickly to pull Greager from the water. A critical factor in his survival was the immediate application of multiple tourniquets on the beach, which medical experts say prevented him from bleeding to death.
  • Extensive Injuries: Greager was rushed to a nearby hospital where he underwent six hours of emergency surgery. The crocodile had severed an artery and all the tendons in his right arm. Fortunately, his bones remained intact, and his main nerves were exposed but not severed, giving him a strong chance of recovery.
  • Optimistic Recovery: After three days in the hospital for pain management and antibiotics, Greager is back home in Richland. While he faces a long road of physical therapy, his doctors are optimistic that he will regain most of the function in his arm.
  • A Survivor’s Perspective: Despite the trauma, Greager has maintained a positive outlook, joking that after 72 years without such an encounter, he considers this his “one and done.” He has canceled an upcoming trip to Fiji to focus on his health but hope to return to diving by the fall.

The incident serves as a rare but harrowing reminder of the risks present in coastal areas near mangroves and lagoons, where crocodile populations are known to reside.
