Remembering ‘Sky King’: The Story Behind the Infamous 2018 Sea-Tac Plane Theft

On the anniversary of one of the most surreal security breaches in aviation history, the story of Richard “Beebo” Russell—better known online as “Sky King”—continues to resonate. In August 2018, Russell, a 28-year-old Horizon Air ground service agent, stunned the world when he commandeered an empty commercial turboprop from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and took it on a 75-minute flight across the Puget Sound.

The incident was marked not by malice, but by a tragic and deeply human exchange captured on air traffic control recordings that eventually turned Russell into a folk hero for many online.

Key moments of the “Sky King” flight:

  • The Takeoff: Despite having no formal flight training, Russell used his credentials to access a Bombardier Q400. He used a pushback tractor to maneuver the plane and successfully took off, an act that experts later described as nearly impossible for a novice.
  • The Aerial Display: For over an hour, onlookers filmed the passenger plane performing acrobatic maneuvers, including a breathtaking barrel roll over the water. Two F-15 fighter jets were scrambled from Portland to intercept the aircraft, but they did not fire, instead attempting to guide Russell toward the ocean.
  • The ATC Recordings: The most enduring part of the event was Russell’s conversation with air traffic controllers. He described himself as a “broken guy” with “a few screws loose,” apologized for his actions, and marveled at the view of the Olympic Mountains. He famously told the controller, “I don’t need that much help; I’ve played some video games before.”
  • The Crash: The flight ended when Russell intentionally crashed the plane into the thick woods of Ketron Island. He was the sole occupant and the only casualty. The FBI later ruled the incident a suicide, noting that he had enough fuel and control to continue flying or attempt a landing if he had wished.
  • Lasting Legacy: In the years since, the “Sky King” incident has prompted massive security overhauls at airports regarding internal threats and “insider” access. However, for the public, Russell remains a symbol of the struggle with mental health and a modern-day myth of a man who, for one hour, broke free from the constraints of his daily life to do something “unfathomable.”
