A Tacoma family is celebrating an emotional reunion after their beloved dog, who was feared dead following a massive house fire, was discovered alive inside the wreckage 48 hours later.
The Fire and the Disappearance The blaze broke out over the weekend, tearing through a residence in South Tacoma. While the human occupants managed to escape the fast-moving flames, their dog, a pit bull mix named “Blue,” was nowhere to be found. Firefighters battled the inferno for hours, and given the intensity of the heat and the extent of the structural damage, the family was left devastated, assuming Blue had perished in the fire.
A Surprising Discovery Two days after the fire was extinguished, the owners returned to the property with restoration crews to see what could be salvaged. While sifted through the debris, they heard a faint whimpering coming from a back room that had been heavily damaged by smoke and water.
Upon further investigation, they found Blue hiding under a collapsed piece of furniture in a small pocket of space that had remained relatively protected from the flames.
Health and Recovery Despite the harrowing ordeal, Blue’s survival is being called a miracle:
- Condition: He was suffering from smoke inhalation and dehydration but remarkably did not sustain any major burns.
- Veterinary Care: Blue was rushed to an emergency veterinarian, where he was placed in an oxygen tank to clear his lungs.
- Homecoming: Doctors expect him to make a full recovery, and he has already been cleared to return to his family, who are currently staying in temporary housing.
A Glimmer of Hope The family lost nearly all of their physical possessions in the fire, but they say having Blue back has given them the strength to start over. Local neighbors have started a community collection to help the family cover both their displacement costs and Blue’s emergency veterinary bills.
