Meta Platforms has revealed plans to cut 168 jobs across its Washington State offices as part of a continued restructuring effort. The layoffs, which are set to take effect in May 2026, were disclosed in a recent Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filed with the state.
The majority of these reductions are concentrated within Meta’s Reality Labs and wearables divisions. This move follows a strategic pivot announced earlier this year by CTO Andrew Bosworth, as the company shifts resources away from certain virtual reality and metaverse projects to prioritize AI-powered wearables and mobile platforms.
The job cuts will impact several key locations in the Puget Sound region, including:
- Two offices in Seattle
- Regional hubs in Bellevue and Redmond
- Approximately 40 remote employees based in Washington
This latest round of downsizing comes on the heels of a larger workforce reduction in March, which saw over 300 regional employees let go. Meta has stated that these “difficult decisions” are necessary to ensure the business remains sustainable while doubling down on high-growth areas like AI creator tools and next-generation smart glasses.
