Lime Taps AI to Keep Scooters Off Seattle Sidewalks

Lime is introducing a new high-tech solution to tackle the persistent issue of electric scooters cluttering and speeding down city sidewalks. Starting this summer, the company is rolling out “Lime Vision” in Seattle—an AI-powered system designed to monitor rider behavior in real time and encourage safer habits.

How the Technology Works The system utilizes front-mounted cameras and a sophisticated artificial intelligence model to distinguish between roads, bike lanes, and sidewalks.

  • Real-Time Alerts: When the AI detects a scooter is being ridden on a sidewalk, the vehicle will emit an audible “chirping” sound.
  • Direct Feedback: In addition to the sound, riders will receive a notification through the Lime app warning them to move to a designated riding area.
  • Gradual Rollout: About half of Seattle’s 7,000-scooter fleet is expected to be equipped with the technology by June, with the remainder of the vehicles being retrofitted or replaced by the end of the year.

Addressing Safety and Community Concerns The initiative comes in response to growing complaints from pedestrians and city officials regarding “antisocial” riding behavior. Sidewalk riding is illegal in many areas, including Seattle, but enforcement has historically been difficult. By using technology to “coach” riders, Lime hopes to reduce accidents and make downtown areas more walkable.

While some critics have questioned why the scooters don’t simply shut down or automatically slow to a crawl on sidewalks, Lime representatives noted that the audible alerts are intended to make both the rider and those around them aware of the violation, effectively using social pressure and clear communication to change behavior.

Data for Better Infrastructure Beyond immediate enforcement, the data collected by these AI-equipped scooters will be shared with the Seattle Department of Transportation. By identifying “hotspots” where people frequently resort to sidewalk riding, the city can better understand where protected bike lanes or improved road infrastructure are most needed to keep riders off the pavement for good.
