Five Dead, Including Teenage Suspects, Following Shooting at San Diego’s Largest Mosque

Headline: Five Dead, Including Teenage Suspects, Following Shooting at San Diego’s Largest Mosque

A tragedy unfolded outside the Islamic Center of San Diego on Monday, resulting in the deaths of three men—including a security guard—after two teenage gunmen opened fire in what authorities are investigating as a hate crime. The two suspects later died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

Key Highlights:

  • The Attack: The shooting took place outside the Clairemont-area mosque complex shortly before midday prayers. Law enforcement officers arrived within minutes to discover three adult victims dead on the scene. A security guard and two school staff members were identified as the deceased.
  • Heroic Intervention: Police Chief Scott Wahl highly commended the actions of the slain security guard, noting that his swift and brave response played a crucial role in preventing the attackers from entering the building and inflicting further casualties.
  • The Suspects: The perpetrators, aged 17 and 18, were found dead from apparent suicide inside a vehicle a few blocks away from the mosque. About two hours before the shooting, the mother of one of the teens had alerted police that her suicidal son had run away in her car, taking several of her firearms. Law enforcement was actively searching for the heavily armed teens, who were dressed in camouflage, when the attack began.
  • Evidence of Bias: The FBI and local police are treating the tragedy as a hate crime. Federal and local officials confirmed finding a suicide note referencing racial pride, as well as anti-Muslim rhetoric written on at least one of the firearms and found inside the suspects’ vehicle.
  • Community Safety: The mosque complex also houses a day school. Officials confirmed that all children and teachers were safely evacuated to a nearby church reunification center, and no children were harmed. The Islamic Center has announced it will remain closed until further notice as the community mourns.
