Family Pleads for Help After Mariners Fan Critically Injured in Double Hit-and-Run

A 32-year-old Seattle Mariners fan is fighting for his life and his leg following a devastating hit-and-run accident on his way home from a game last Friday.

A Night of Celebration Turns Tragic James Weinstein was traveling back from T-Mobile Park with friends after attending a game with tickets he had won through work. During the drive, James accidentally dropped his sunglasses out of the car window. According to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, he exited the vehicle on Canyon Road East to retrieve them when he was struck by a dark-colored pickup truck.

A Double Collision The incident was made even more harrowing by a second impact:

  • The First Driver: Witnesses say a dark-colored pickup truck—identified by debris as a 1994 to 2002 Chevy Silverado—hit James, paused briefly, and then fled the scene heading southbound.
  • The Second Driver: Seconds later, while James was lying in the roadway, he was struck by a second vehicle. Unlike the first driver, the operator of the second car stopped immediately, called for help, and has been fully cooperative with investigators.

Severe Injuries and Recovery James was rushed to St. Joseph Medical Center in critical condition. His family reports that he suffered a severed artery, a broken femur, a broken arm, a cracked clavicle, and broken ribs. While emergency surgery saved his life, he remains in the ICU as doctors work to save his leg. His sister described him as a man with a “generous spirit” who is now facing a grueling recovery process.

Police Appeal for Evidence The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office is searching for the driver of the dark Chevy Silverado, which likely has significant damage to its center grill. Authorities are asking anyone with surveillance footage or information regarding a truck matching this description to come forward.

The incident occurred around 10:15 p.m. on Friday, April 10, on Canyon Road East between 72nd Street East and 116th Street East. A GoFundMe has been established to assist James and his family with the mounting medical costs.
