Explosive Device Recovered in Capitol State Forest Investigation

Authorities are investigating after a potential tragedy was averted in the Capitol State Forest. On Tuesday, a suspicious device—later confirmed to be an explosive—was discovered in a popular area of the multi-use forest in Thurston County.

The discovery prompted a swift multi-agency response, including the Washington State Patrol (WSP) bomb squad, to ensure the safety of hikers, campers, and local residents.

Key details of the incident:

  • Discovery and Response: The device was located near a trailhead within the sprawling 110,000-acre state forest. Law enforcement moved quickly to cordoned off the immediate vicinity, and the WSP’s specialized explosives unit was brought in to safely handle and remove the object.
  • Safety Confirmed: Following a thorough sweep of the area by bomb technicians and K9 units, authorities confirmed that no additional devices were found. The area has since been deemed safe for public use, though visitors are encouraged to stay alert and report any unusual items.
  • Ongoing Investigation: Investigators have not yet released details regarding the specific type of explosive or its potential origin. They are currently looking into whether the device was discarded, intentionally placed, or part of unauthorized recreational activity.
  • Public Appeal: Law enforcement is asking anyone who may have seen suspicious activity or vehicles in the Capitol State Forest over the last 48 hours to come forward.

While the forest is a frequent destination for outdoor enthusiasts and target shooters, officials reminded the public that the use of unauthorized explosives is strictly prohibited and poses a severe threat to the environment and public safety.
