Brass, Beats, and Streets: HONK! Fest West Revs Up Seattle for a Three-Day Acoustic Takeover

One of Seattle’s loudest, most vibrant traditions is roaring back as HONK! Fest West returns for its annual three-day musical takeover. The completely free, family-friendly celebration of street music and brass performance kicked off Friday evening and will continue shaking up local neighborhoods through the weekend.

Originating in the Boston area in 2006, the renegade street band movement quickly found a second home in Seattle in 2008. Since then, the independent nonprofit arts festival has dedicated itself to keeping public spaces accessible and bursting with live performance.

A Global Meltdown of Sound

Unlike highly orchestrated music festivals with massive main stages, HONK! is all about mobility, acoustic power, and unpolished joy. Over the weekend, more than 25 different street bands and marching corps will take over local parks and sidewalks.

The lineup features a massive cross-cultural blend of sounds, including:

  • High-energy New Orleans-style second lines ParentMap
  • Enormous Afro-Brazilian samba drumming groups ParentMap
  • Fast-paced, punchy punk-brass collectives Seattle’s Child
  • Hypnotic rhythms from Eastern European and Latin American street traditions Seattle’s Child

Because the festival emphasizes community connection over passive listening, barriers are non-existent. Musicians play right at eye level with the crowd, and several interactive “pick-up bands” are built into the schedule, inviting anyone in attendance to grab an instrument and play along.

Where to Catch the Music This Weekend

Seattle’s Child

To reach communities that are historically underserved by the mainstream arts, the festival shifts to a completely different neighborhood each day:

  • Friday night (May 29): The festival launched in Georgetown, with a series of electric, coffee shop, and underpass pop-up stages lighting up the industrial neighborhood from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. HONK! Fest West
  • Saturday (May 30): The party heads south to Columbia City. Columbia Park and surrounding sidewalks will host continuous performances from noon until 8 p.m., culminating in a massive, open-jam session with the “HONK! All-Stars.” HONK! Fest West
  • Sunday (May 31): The weekend wraps up at Pratt Park in the Central District. The open fields will turn into an acoustic playground from noon until 6 p.m., offering one last chance to dance in the streets. ParentMap

All events are fully outdoors, rain or shine, and require absolutely no tickets or reservations. Attendees are encouraged to show up, bring their dancing shoes, and support the community-funded event through local donations.
