Cascades Braced for Rare March Blizzard: Hazardous Travel and Heavy Snow Expected

The National Weather Service has issued a rare Blizzard Warning for the Cascade Mountains, marking a significant and dangerous return to winter weather for Western Washington this week. This high-level alert is reserved for severe conditions where heavy snowfall combines with sustained winds of over 35 mph, reducing visibility to less than a quarter-mile for at least three hours.

Key Forecast Details

  • Timing: The Blizzard Warning is scheduled to take effect at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, and last until 5 a.m. Thursday, March 12.
  • Heavy Snowfall: Total accumulations in the mountains could reach a staggering 2 to 5 feet by the end of the week. Specific passes like Stevens Pass are bracing for some of the highest totals, with several feet expected.
  • High Winds: Gusts are predicted to reach between 35 and 45 mph, creating whiteout conditions and the potential for downed trees and power outages.
  • Lowland Impacts: While the heaviest hits are in the mountains, the lowlands won’t be spared. Expect 1 to 3 inches of rain through Friday, with a possible rain-snow mix during the colder overnight and early morning hours.

Travel and Safety Warnings

Authorities are strongly discouraging travel across mountain passes during the warning period. Conditions are expected to be “difficult to impossible” due to slick roads and near-zero visibility.

If travel is absolutely necessary, officials urge drivers to:

  • Carry an emergency winter kit (food, water, blankets, flashlight).
  • Ensure the vehicle is equipped with tire chains.
  • Check the latest pass reports and road closures before heading out.

This storm system is part of a broader “March Madness” weather pattern that has already brought significant snow to the region. As the system moves out later this week, rising temperatures and rain could increase the risk of flooding as the fresh snow begins to melt.
