Two Seattle women have safely returned home after a harrowing six-day ordeal in the United Arab Emirates, where they were trapped by a sudden and violent escalation in the conflict between Iran, the U.S., and Israel.
The women—who were part of a larger group from the Kent area—had stopped in Dubai as a layover for a “bucket-list” safari trip to Rwanda. Their vacation plans were shattered just hours before their scheduled departure when Iranian airstrikes led to the immediate closure of regional airspace and the total shutdown of Dubai International Airport.
Key details of their journey home include:
- Six Days of Uncertainty: The travelers spent nearly a week confined to their hotel, describing a “volatile” atmosphere. They reported hearing the sounds of explosions as the UAE’s air defense systems intercepted missiles and drones overhead.
- Communication Blackout: The group faced significant challenges reaching official help. They initially found the U.S. Embassy in Dubai shuttered as personnel were moved for safety, and they struggled to find reliable information as their multiple attempts to rebook commercial flights were met with repeated cancellations.
- A Sentimental Mission: The trip held deep personal significance for the group; it was planned as a tribute to a close friend, Diana, who had passed away during the vacation’s planning stages. Despite the fear and financial loss of missing their safari, the women expressed relief at simply being back on American soil.
- Wider Crisis: Their story reflects a broader travel crisis in the region. Thousands of Americans were reportedly stranded across the Middle East as “Operation Epic Fury”—the U.S.-Israeli military campaign—intensified, leading the State Department to issue “Do Not Travel” advisories for 14 different countries in the area.
While the women are now safe in Washington, many other travelers remain in the region, with some reportedly paying exorbitant sums for private charter flights to escape the mounting unrest. Local lawmakers, including Rep. Adam Smith, have pledged to continue assisting other constituents still seeking a way out of the conflict zone.
