A multi-agency police pursuit in Mason County ended with the arrest of a 47-year-old Shelton man after law enforcement deployed spike strips and a precision immobilization technique (PIT) maneuver to halt his vehicle.
The incident began late Tuesday night when a Washington State Patrol trooper attempted a routine traffic stop on Olympic Highway North in Shelton. Instead of pulling over, the driver sped off, prompting a high-speed chase. The Shelton Police Department and the Mason County Sheriff’s Office quickly joined the pursuit to assist the state patrol.
As the fleeing vehicle tore through the Shelton area, officers successfully deployed two separate sets of spike strips. Although the strips effectively punctured and deflated all four of the vehicle’s tires, the driver refused to stop and continued traveling on his rims for a short distance.
The pursuit finally came to a safe conclusion near State Route 3 and Southeast Arcadia Avenue, where a Mason County Sheriff’s deputy executed a successful PIT maneuver to force the disabled vehicle to a stop. The driver was taken into custody without further incident and booked into jail on multiple charges, including felony eluding, reckless driving, and driving with a suspended license.
Following the arrest, the Mason County Sheriff’s Office praised the seamless communication and coordinated teamwork between the state troopers, local police, and sheriff’s deputies, which allowed them to successfully defuse a dangerous situation on public roads.
