Audacious Car Thief Flees Troopers in Stolen Corvette, Then Steals It Back from Impound Lot

A Pierce County man is facing multiple felony charges after leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase in a stolen Chevrolet Corvette, only to later break into a private tow yard to steal the exact same sports car back from police impound.

The initial incident began when a Washington State Patrol (WSP) trooper spotted a late-model Corvette traveling at extreme speeds on Interstate 5. When the trooper attempted a traffic stop, the driver accelerated, weaving aggressively through heavy traffic and easily evading pursuit due to the sheer horsepower of the vehicle. WSP chose to terminate the high-speed chase out of concern for public safety, but later located the sports car abandoned in a nearby parking lot. The vehicle was confirmed stolen and towed to a secure, fenced impound facility.

The case took a bizarre turn less than 24 hours later. According to investigators, the suspect returned under the cover of night, breached the perimeter fencing of the impound yard, located the Corvette, and drove it straight through the security gates to escape.

Following a coordinated investigation utilizing surveillance footage and regional automated license plate readers, police tracked the vehicle to a residence where the suspect was taken into custody without further incident. He now faces an extensive list of charges, including possession of a stolen motor vehicle, felony eluding of law enforcement, second-degree burglary, and malicious mischief for the destruction of the impound facility’s property.
