King County public health officials have issued an urgent warning advising the public and their pets to avoid all contact with the water at Green Lake in Seattle following the discovery of toxic blue-green algae.
The health advisory strongly recommends against swimming, wading, or drinking from the lake until further notice. According to the Washington State Toxic Algae Monitoring Program, the cyanobacteria blooming in the water can produce dangerous toxins harmful to humans and animals alike.
Pet owners are being urged to exercise extreme caution, as animals can become severely ill or face life-threatening complications if they drink the contaminated water or lick the toxic scum from their fur. Park visitors are advised to heed all posted safety guidance and stay entirely out of the water in areas where visible algae accumulation is present.
