Nearly eight years after the event that paralyzed Seattle’s airspace, the story of Richard “Beebo” Russell—the Horizon Air employee who became an internet legend known as “Sky King”—remains one of the most baffling and poignant chapters in aviation history.
On August 10, 2018, Russell, a ground service agent with no formal flight training, managed to take off in a 76-seat turboprop aircraft, leading military jets on a high-stakes chase before crashing into a remote island in the Puget Sound.
Highlights of the “Sky King” Incident:
- The Unlikely Pilot: Using his employee credentials to access a parked Bombardier Q400 at Sea-Tac International Airport, Russell used a tow vehicle to position the plane and successfully took off. His ability to get the aircraft airborne using only knowledge gained from flight simulators stunned investigators.
- Acrobatics and Air Traffic Control: During the 75-minute flight, Russell performed a series of dangerous maneuvers, including a complex barrel roll over the water that professional pilots called a “miracle.” Throughout the flight, he maintained a calm, self-deprecating, and heartbreaking dialogue with air traffic controllers, describing himself as a “broken guy” who just wanted to see the mountains.
- The Military Response: Two F-15 fighter jets were scrambled from Portland to intercept the plane. While the public feared a terrorist attack, the recordings revealed a man in a mental health crisis who apologized for the trouble he was causing and joked with the pilots.
- The Tragic End: Refusing suggestions to land at a nearby military base, Russell eventually crashed the plane into the densely wooded Ketron Island. He was the only person on board and did not survive. The FBI later concluded the act was a “purely suicidal” endeavor.
- A Lasting Security Impact: The breach forced the aviation industry to rethink “insider threats.” Since the incident, airports across the globe have implemented stricter “two-person” rules for cockpit access and enhanced background checks for ground crews to prevent a repeat of such a massive security failure.
Though the event exposed terrifying gaps in airport security, Russell’s story continues to be viewed by many through a lens of tragedy rather than malice. He is often remembered not as a criminal, but as a symbol of the quiet desperation and mental health struggles that can exist behind the scenes of a major international airport.
